What To Do, Where To Start

What I like to do before starting anything, is decide not to overwhelm myself and start DECLUTTERING! I usually have a lot of knick knacks around the house that aren’t meaningful or sentimental, but serve as reminders for something, somewhat important. One way not to get flustered about the amount work you have to do, is to not set a limited time frame on how quickly organizing needs to be finished. I give myself an indefinite length of time-within reason. If I intend to do a room or two, I might give myself a week or two. But if I decide to do an entire overhaul of my house, I give myself a month.

Once I decide on the length of time, I start with those little kick knacks that seem to accumulate over time. It might be a little redundant if they are really insignificant and have absolutely no meaning, but it prepares me for being ready to throw away things that are meaningful. It allows me to prioritize the things I intend to keep and things that are just plain garbage. Like those wishful thinking jeans hanging in your closet for the past five years. Don’t forget the storage bags you've put away ten years ago😊 Donation box! Also, remove old or duplicate items right away. Once you’ve purged all the clutter that you’ve been clinging to, you’ll feel some weight lifted off your shoulders and have a clear mind and space that’s ready to take on deciding what goes where.

Not sure where to start? Pick the most crowded space and start there. Take it slow and again, no pressure. If you’re over thinking it, you might just exhaust yourself and give up half way in. The less significance a room has, the easier it will be to do it first. Once you blow through the painful stuff, you’ll find yourself enjoying organizing near the end. The trick is to start with a hard push and finish with an air of fresh air.

Refine that storage room! Updated shelving with crates, totes or fabric storage bins can help conceal the mess inside them. (Not condoning tossing a bunch of stuff in em’ to save time) But yeah, just sayin'-it hides stuff in a nice way. Keep the necessities up front and easily accessible. You don’t want to have to dig and burrow to get to grandma’s apron.

The kitchen, oh the beautiful kitchen. So here it is, short and sweet. Pick a place for all your glassware that everyone can easily reach, except children of course. Do the same for your pots and pans, spices and healthy snacks. You can use lid dividers for your plastic containers, baking sheets and pot lids. Try out magnetic spice containers and mount a magnet sheet on the inside of your pantry door. This helps clear up shelf space for bulkier items. Inside the fridge doesn’t have to be a jungle. Simply toss rotten or old foods and keep it dry and clean storing fresh veggies and fruits in the drawers, frozen foods inside the freezer and things you’d like to keep chilled at the back of your fridge to keep them colder than the items placed at the front of the shelves.

In the bathroom, use small narrow baskets, command hooks and tension rods to create space on the inside of the door of your vanity and in front of shelves to lift items off the bottom of it and suspend them for easy unobstructed access. Voila, with all these combined, you have enough space that’ll be equivalent to an extra shelf without installing one.

The bedrooms should be functioning but nice to look at so you feel relaxed when you need rest. This might sound contradictory, but stuff everything you can in the closet! Double and triple your closet space by: putting more shelves to accommodate storage above your clothing rod. On those rods, use pop can clips, yes soda can clips to hang multiple hangers in a cascade. Hang your shoes, ties, belts and handbags on the inside of the door, or hey, that space above the rod that you never see. That wall space in front of the shelves and right above your head. Ding!
Find hidden wall space and think about what can fit there. If your not using the blind spots and have run out of shelf space, betcha’ you can fit a whole bunch of things there.
